Name of Project: Butterflies across the curriculum.

Description of Target Group: The proposed adaptation of the curriculum will be developed for mixed-age
groupings of children from N-6 who demonstrate a keen interest in butterflies
and who exhibit similar strengths in their specific learning style.

Description of Project: The purpose of this project is for the teachers involved to develop a model in which
the study of Monarch Butterflies and the creation of a butterfly garden can be incorporated with current
curricular outcomes. This will provide an enriched learning experience for these gifted & talented students.
The groups will be mixed-age students, who have similar learning styles. (i.e. visual learners will be grouped
together, kinaesthetic learners will be grouped together, etc.) The project will be developed with the following goals:

~ the students will become talented experts in their knowledge of butterflies,
particularly the Monarch Butterfly

~ these students will become the schools leaders in creating a butterfly school

~ collaboration and cooperative decision making skills with other children,
other age levels and community members will be developed in order to plan
a butterfly garden and make decisions as to who will take responsibility
for each stage of the process.

~ these students will develop the skills necessary to share knowledge with peers
in their classroom and throughout the school

Expected Outcomes of Project: The staff at the school who are developing the Butterfly Curriculum will work
collaboratively with staff at Inkster and Brock Corydon Schools, as well as with the Educational Coordinator
for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, sharing knowledge, ideas and resources. One staff person from each
school has attended “The International Monarch Butterfly Teachers Network Workshop”. These teachers bring
their knowledge from that workshop to the project.

We see this as a great opportunity:

~ to enhance the learning of the gifted and talented children at our individual schools
~ to assist children in recognizing and developing their individual learning styles
~ to develop talent in knowledge and respect for the environment

We will be willing to share the adapted curriculum with other educators once it is complete.
